Hyperscale Podcast Highlights: Angela Radcliffe on AI, Data Ownership, and Transforming Education
The wait is over—Season 3 of HYPERSCALE is finally here, and in this episode, I sit down with Angela Radcliffe in our New York City studio for a thought-provoking conversation on technology's unintended consequences and how we can shape a better future in the AI era.
The conversation explores the ways technology, from AI in classrooms to the risks of deep fakes, is shifting the educational landscape. As adults, we might think that the future and the fate of the internet is in our hands, but it’s not: it’s in the hands of our children.
So, how do we prepare them for the future—one that is tech-driven, constantly evolving, and far more connected than we ever realized?
A Tipping Point in AI and Education
"We are at a tipping point where we can ensure that we don't create unintended consequences in the age of AI, but it starts with educating our children" Angela emphasized. She didn’t hold back about the current state of education: "They're not doing anything to prepare children. Education is going to need a whole-scale change."
Rethinking Basics for the AI Era
Angela sees an opportunity in change: "Rote learning can be taught by AI in hours. That gives us the chance to focus on neglected basics—health literacy, financial literacy, and understanding data as a contribution to society." She stressed the need to foster curiosity and an "innovative mindset," warning, "We rob our children of amazing innovations when we march them through outdated systems."
Teaching Kids About Data
Angela called for a new literacy in the digital age: "We must teach children that everything they do has a data exhaust. Their data is their contribution to society and, potentially, their income stream in an AI-driven world." Explaining "fair data" (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable), she pointed out that this understanding is essential as our kids become global citizens.
AI’s Transformative Potential
On AI’s promise, Angela shared optimism: "AI can solve intractable problems—cancer, climate change, inequality—by harnessing collective data." But she warned, "To unlock that, we must empower kids to understand their agency over their data."
Parenting in a Digital World
Angela acknowledged the challenges of raising "digital natives," recounting how her daughter’s YouTube search for diaper tutorials spiraled into adult content: "It’s not about banning devices; it’s about vigilance and teaching kids to understand algorithms and discern truth from fiction."
Data Ownership as a Human Right
Advocating for "human data ownership as the 31st human right," Angela argued: "AI is fueled by our data—our essence. If we own our data, we can ensure it’s used for good while benefiting from its value."
A Call to Action: Clinical Trials and Impact
Angela urged listeners to make a difference: "Impact influence is the most important thing we can do. Participate in clinical trials. I’ve done nine, from COVID studies to breast cancer research. It’s not just about curing diseases—it’s about addressing root causes like mental health and addiction that impact society."
Angela’s message is simple: we all have a role to play. Whether it’s participating in clinical trials, teaching the next generation about data, or embracing the possibilities of AI, there’s a way for everyone to contribute.
This conversation is essential listening for parents, educators, and anyone curious about the intersection of technology and humanity. Tune in to discover how we can navigate the future with optimism, innovation, and purpose.
